In addition to his internship and neurosurgical residency, Dr. Smith studied trauma care at the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services & Systems.  He also completed a neurosurgical fellowship at Atkinson Morely's Hospital in Wimbledon, England and Maiden Vale Hospital in London, England.   Dr. Smith received training in pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Washington D.C., and in neuropathology at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Smith is the former head of spinal reconstructive surgery at the University of Arizona School of Medicine at Tucson. He has considerable expertise in the evaluation of degenerative, discogenic, and traumatic lesions of the entire spine. In addition to performing traditional spinal surgery, Dr. Smith is well versed in both anterior and posterior cervical, thoracic, and lumbar fusions, including laproscopic fusions of the lumbar spine, fluoroscopic approaches to the thoracic spine, and endoscopic and percutaneous discectomies.
